Latvian (or Lettish) is the official state language of Latvia. There are about 1.4 million native Latvian speakers in Latvia and about 150,000 abroad. Latvian is closely related to Lithuanian, another Baltic language, but the two are not mutually intelligible. The Latvian language has three dialects: Livonian, Latgalian and the Middle dialect. These Latvian dialects should not be confused with the Livonian, Curonian, Semigallian and Selonian languages.
